If I could give lest than a star… I would
I am writing this review out of extreme frustration and disappointment with the care I have received at this hospital.
I arrived at A&E on Thursday evening with severe pain in the lower left side of my abdomen. I was told it could be an abscess, but staff were unsure whether it was located on the ovary, uterus, or bladder, and that I urgently needed an internal scan by a gynecologist.
I was told repeatedly that I would be seen “soon”, yet I was left on a trolley in A&E for two full nights. From Thursday at 7:30 until 2:00 AM, I was finally placed on a trolley and kept there under unacceptable conditions.
During this time, I had blood tests, urine tests, a swab, and a very brief abdominal ultrasound that lasted only a few minutes — no internal scan, despite it being clearly indicated.
After two nights, I was moved to the main hospital, where I am still here on Tuesday, and I am still on a trolley. Since then, I have been seen by 4–5 different doctors, each giving a different opinion, with no clear diagnosis and no proper explanation.
I was told the scan would happen on Tuesday, but then informed I must wait because it is a bank holiday. Meanwhile, my pain continues. Staff say my blood results are “improving” but cannot explain what is actually wrong or where the problem is located.
Shockingly, the results of my recent swab are still not available, yet staff looked at results from 2022 instead. I find this completely unacceptable and concerning.
The lack of communication between doctors and nurses is obvious. I was told blood would be taken again after one day — it took two days. Information changes depending on who you speak to, and no one seems accountable.
The conditions are miserable. I have not had a proper shower since Thursday. My cannula sticker has visible dried blood and was not changed. I am given bedsheets instead of towels and must repeatedly beg for basic necessities. Some staff are rude, dismissive, and show no empathy.
I feel treated like I am worthless, like someone “off the street”, despite the fact that I work, pay taxes, and have contributed to this country for over six years.
What is even more upsetting is seeing patients with substance abuse issues placed in single rooms, while patients who are genuinely suffering and paying into the system are left on trolleys, ignored, and neglected.
On top of everything, medical staff cannot even pronounce my name correctly, which only adds to the feeling of disrespect and lack of professionalism. I received at least five different medical opinions with no conclusion.
This hospital is full of empty promises, misinformation, and poor standards of care. The goal seems to be to temporarily reduce pain and then send patients home without answers, diagnosis, or follow-up.
I am sharing this because I know I am not the only one experiencing this. Many patients are suffering quietly and are not being taken seriously.
This system needs to wake up. Patients deserve dignity, communication, basic hygiene, and competent medical care — not lies, delays, and neglect. Ah.. and to mention… I’m located in front of some door that say Danger, electrical hazard! This door area to be keep clear at all times!
I stayed in Ward 8B at University Hospital Limerick and really appreciated the care I received from the nurses and doctors there. Everyone was kind, professional, and always willing to help.
Big thanks as well to Surgeon Nabi and the theatre team for taking good care of me during my surgery.
The MRI delay was a little frustrating, but overall I still appreciated the communication, support, and care from the staff throughout my stay.
Was a patient here recently coming through A&E by ambulance and surgery performed. I was blessed to be a patient of Dr Yasser Abededaim the man who saved my life. The most caring, empathetic and talented surgeon I have ever met. His continued care and care and kindness meant more than he will ever know. He and his team are super heroes and their dedication is admirable. All the staff and nurses in the Thomond ward especially nurse Clodagh are amazing and angels. Thank you UHL and your amazing staff for everything. Dr Abedeldaim you are in my prayers every night and you are an angel on earth.
I had a wonderful experience in UHL. I was treated with kindness, respect and professionalism. The staff took such care looking after me and my baby and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff members at the maternity ward. They were fantastic and I felt so cared fir at one of the most important points in my life. Go raibh maith agaibh.
The initial waiting room was a war zone thanks to substance abuse and alcoholics mostly.
Once past triage my experience was of the acute medical assessment unit (A.M.U)
The unit is ran incredibly well.
The staff are amazing they are all so professional well mannered and spoken.
Also a special mention to the honourable men one a porter and one from catering people like this make all the difference.
I can only give praise for the professionalism of the staff and doctors in the ED and subsequently in the ward. For my six days there, I received the very best of care for which I am extremely grateful. It is indeed a "Centre of Excellence"
Thank you all very sincerely.
So disappointed appointment at11 o clock they didn’t call me 1hours 30 min. So many people came after me. Everyone is gone. What kind service doctors did. If they don’t see exact time their patients. This is too much worthless for go to hospital.
This is not even a review about the hospital. This is an honest disgust towards all staff working at the paediatric department. My fiancee went there being referred from Shannon doc to the "emergency unit" with my 2yo boy. He had a bad infection on his thumb. He didn't sleep properly for days because he was in enormous pain. What did they do for 9 hours spent there? They lied about basically everything. The first time they saw a "doctor" was after 6 hrs of waiting . He said He'd just get the blood results and they will know more about his infection. The problem was they never took blood from him. They absolutely had no idea what was going on with my Son. Not to mention all the horrors stories They've heard in those several hrs from others parents what other Children were going through. Eventually They sent my son home without any help "Go to Dublin or Cork, goodbye". Staff had No empathy whatsoever. Absolute mess and lack of knowledge. If you are studying for 10 years just to give Calpol to a 2 year old which seriously needs medical help just quit and stay away from anything close called medicine please.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILD THERE, YOU WILL JUST WASTE YOUR TIME DEALING WITH DOCTORS WITH BOUGHT PAPERS.
