Awful, awful and more awful. I have autism which makes attending the dentist incredibly stressful and distressing. Got referred to special care at the Dublin dental hospital. I have been waiting many months for a general anaesthetic to get dental work done and have had a broken tooth and pain for months but been waiting for the general anaesthetic. Was promised June/July. I had an appointment in April which I missed due to the fuel protests blocking the roads. I rang and explained I couldn’t there and asked for another appointment. Chased up for the next 2 months and repeatedly told my dentist had no clinics but I would be booked in as soon as she did. I then get an email saying the dentist has left the service and this:
We are not able to arrange treatment under intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic solely on request. The appropriate treatment setting, including whether sedation or general anaesthesia is clinically indicated, can only be determined following clinical assessment by the treating team.
I have done all of the assessments and put myself through months of stress dragging myself to appointments I was scared to go to just to be told I would basically need to start again. I have explained to them before in detail that I cannot see a male due to being subjected to months of r*pe and domestic violence. I get this message from them:
We understand that you have requested treatment by a female clinician. Unfortunately, this Hospital does not have a female dentist working within this service.
How can they not have a female in the whole hospital? I find that incredibly hard to believe. So after months of stress I have to start again with a male which I can’t do so they have just dropped me and told me to go back to my normal dentist. They know I don’t have one as a normal dentist can’t deal with the anxiety and me as an autistic person, hence why I was referred to special care all those months ago. Months on a waiting list down the drain and now have to start again knowing I’m going to have panic attacks going through the assessment process from the beginning again.
Absolutely disgusting. All that and all they can say is
We regret that we are unable to provide the response you were hoping for.
Absolutely fantastic.
Went with a person twice in the past two months. There is parking but l came from the Brayvdirection and decided to park in Bray and get the Dart. Stop's at Pierce Street and probably a 5 min walk to the Hospital. Highly recommend.
On entering a bright spacious area to wait in. Pick a number when you enter and called in rotation. Very efficient.
When that's organised one is sent to the particular area where their appointment is allocated.
The Staff are so kind and friendly. Couldn't do enough for you. Cleanliness 100%.
Wheelchair accessible.
A Colossal Mismanagement of Patient Care!!
I am writing this out of sheer dispear after being trapped in a circular nightmare with the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH). For four years, I have suffered from unnecessary dental pain on top of a decade of chronic illness, only to be failed by systemic incompetence at every turn.
The Cycle of Failures: I waited 9 months to be seen. Had every check done for my pain issue to be told by the root canal specialist. Try an aligner for a few months before we do a root canal. You have been waiting 9 months in pain so we will get you straight back in. The aligners didn't help so I called back and they completely discharged me. I explained dozens of times over the following weeks that no I shouldn't have been discharged and I was told on the chair I could come straight back in after trying the aligners and no one got back to me.
Eventually a saving grace a staff member told me I can come into A&E so I did, and waited all day in there only to be told no unfortunately you can't get a root canal in A&E
I left a complaint that day and they replied on the final day of the 30 days. The reply barely reffered to my issue at all I genuinely thought they had me mixed up with someone else's complaint. It was clear my complaint was lost or ignored and they replied with mumbo jumbo
After my original complaint was mishandled and notes were incorrectly recorded, I went back and forth with admin for more months and a compromise was made. I was told to get a new referral. My local dentist and sent this in, but DDUH "lost" it. It had to be resent multiple times
I was told there was a 3-week processing time. After waiting two months with no word, I called only to find my referral had been DECLINED over a month prior. No one bothered to notify me!
The referral was declined based on the very same incorrect notes from two years ago that caused my original complaint notes I have repeatedly told staff are inaccurate!
I have Support from local TDs and clearly stating that I am a disabled citizen in severe pain who cannot afford private treatment, I have been left to "slip through the cracks."
It is a damning indictment of our healthcare system when a patient has to beg and plead for a simple root canal. My mental health is in a dark place due to the stress and physical agony this "disarray" has caused
I made one final pley to the CEO of DDUH and it took 10 weeks which is way over the 30 days limit. He didn't even respond. The complaint was simply declined. There's no heart or human in this building!
I am now in a position as I was 4 years ago. Due to my severe disability. I have not got the finalicial ability to cover this cost elsewhere. The fact alone that these are supposed to be the people who help people who can't afford otherwise and Would have saved me 4 years of pain
If the DDUH does not have an obligation to treat a citizen in chronic pain, who does? I am calling on someone in authority to finally step up and fix this. I don't want to fight anymore, I just want the pain to stop.
100% amazing had to bring my 73 year old mum to a&e 1st time in the dental hospital. Checked in was called within half an hour in specking to one of the dental nurses and she was so kind and very welcoming took all details and explained everything down to a tee. My mum.had to get xrays done and then a tooth pulled , all of the staff where just amazing with my mum as she was so nervous. She had two amazing dentist looking after her they done a fantastic job from beginning to end I can't fault this place at all. All the staff from reception to nurses and dentist where just outstanding 100%
I attended the A&e on Thursday after the hardest month of my life with pain, infection and no sleep. My own dentist said my case was to complex and to present to A&e once I had finished my three different antibiotics if no improvement.. I did so on Thursday and had the most incredible experience. What I assumed would be a simple fix turned out to be much more complicated and I was scheduled for emergency surgery on Friday morning with Dr Mary and her team!! That women blew me away!!!! I was incredibly nervous despite cracking jokes and she did everything to make me comfortable and relaxed !!! Her team were incredibly supportive and kind . Altho I may need more surgery with an ENT and the recovery has been very difficult I can strangely say I enjoyed my experience and I am exceptional grateful to Dr Mary and the incredible dentists and nurses who I met .
I had an absolutely horrendous experience. They kept me stuck at this dentist for FOUR years, dragging out the treatment for no good reason. In all that time, all they managed to do were two crowns and a couple of fillings—yet somehow they still took years to get even that done. Halfway through working on my teeth, my dentist just left, and I was handed over to someone else like it didn’t matter.
After four years, I genuinely believed everything was finally finished, but even then I was already having problems with every single tooth they touched. My crown has fallen out so many times since they first put it in, and it’s out again right now. And despite the fact that their work has caused me nothing but issues and has left half my teeth damaged, they still can’t be bothered to prioritise fixing the mess they created.
I’ve never felt so dismissed, frustrated, or let down by a dental practice in my life.
