For a hospital it does its job. In many parts of the hospital though it does look as if it is falling apart. Toilets are not the most hygienic looking and do not smell the best and the wards look dark and not modern at all. For a hospital in the capital it is below average.

As an inpatient at UHW Cardiff I have found 95% of all staff at the hospital I have encountered have been very friendly and professional and caring From domestic staff to consultants. However as everywhere there are a few who let the team down. The building is quite frankly filthy and in some areas very dilapidated. I found that cleaning in some areas poor especially bathrooms toilets and wash areas. There was faeces in a toilet for 2 days as no flush working- someone had tried as access panel was open and left as a hazard in front of the sink Shower rooms unclean faeces noted on wall for over 2 days until reported. The ward I was on was I’ve run with junk equipment trolleys and lots of other stuff far too much to mention individually which created tripping hazards everywhere. The care by medical and nursing staff on the whole was a very good standard and most of the time patients were treated with dignity and respect. The environment due to the hospital being so large creates problems for navigation to and from departments very difficult. This seems also to apply to the continuity of care as departments do not seem to coordinate to a good standard between departments leading to delays and oversights of care The system in place between departments and procedures are delayed or missed on a constant basis. When brought up with many of the staff even nurses and Doctors agreed this was a major problem and also the systems used were lacking leading to delays and ultimately bed blocking. Signage at the hospital is poor and there are many lost individuals looking aimlessly where to go. The lifts are a nightmare as there are so few for patient use and getting from floor to floor can feel like an eternity. You have some great staff who work professionallly, to a high standard, treat patients with dignity and respect and are very caring but all the other problems stated overshadow this and brings the whole operation as broken. Whoever is in overall charge needs to take charge and run it cohesively making communication systems and data available to all departments to save time and money red tape and ensure good standards of care to patients My last gripe is the patient is always the last to know and medical information is not passed onto the patients leaving them in the dark about recent tests length of stay referrals etc. we as patients are not generic we are individuals and should be involved in our own care along with medical staff

Just returned from A&E. Was seen immediately and had all tests and results within just over 2 hours. I know the NHS is stretched but I was fortunate to be there early when it was quiet and had the most wonderful competent and knowledgeable young female doctor who gave me more information than I've been given from gp's in the past 2 weeks. Reminds me of a time when the NHS had time for each patient. Nothing but praise.

I had an outpatients appointment booked for 9am. I was able to park easily in the multi storey carpet. We arrived 40 minutes before time as my wife holds a blue badge due to mobility issues we had hoped for a disabled parking space outside the main concourse but there are limited spaces and these were already full. On arriving at the outpatients Dept Unit 5, we were booked in as soon as the admin staff arrived. It was explained to us that on Wednesday mornings the consultants hold an MDT meeting and appt times can run a bit late. I was called in to my appt with the consultant, had my procedure, waited to have some blood tests and back in the car by 9.50am. UHW is a very old and tired hospital and not that easy to navigate around normally but I'm forever grateful to the NHS and the service it provides and all the staff.

It's an old, Labour run (down), Welsh hospital, one of the biggest in the country. Some parts look reasonably modern but others look like they're out of some sort of post apocalypse movie. Rumour has it that there are people living in the underground maintenance tunnels who haven't been seen for decades. My out patient procedure was simple and successfully completed almost on time, I only had to wait 45 minutes past my appointment time.

Worst experience ever, I have to stay for a full day just to get my IV cannula removed. Nurses are not helpful you have to keep asking over and over again to do one simple thing for you. They dont respect your choice, even though the doctor from the cardio team said im good to leave but the medicine department was refusing to let me sign a self discharge even though all my results were normal, i was forced to stay just because of my iv cannula

The A&E staff are rude and condescending. I went in after haemorrhaging and the staff only partially assessed me and wrote down information they assumed which was wrong. Based on the wrong information then proceeded to tell me what i was experiencing was normal. When I corrected them, they only corrected the chart and did not follow up. Absolutely horrendous experience having illness downplayed. Was also told since it’s a bank holiday weekend, “what do you expect”

I am horrified at the lack of care a loved one recently received at this hospital. He has Crohn’s and came in after a few days of antibiotics and pain management for an abscess. That being said, they knew full well how he was coming, knew full well that he was in so much pain he couldn’t walk, that the only relief might’ve been laying down. But no, for TWENTY TWO HOURS he was made to SIT ON HIS ABSCESS!!!!!! Meanwhile, more people were coming in and being placed in beds ahead of him. He received very little update about timing that he’d receive care. He got no sleep. He sweated, no access to hygiene maintenance, again, with an abscess in a very sensitive and unhygienic location…. He eventually got his surgery which was the first time he had the ability to lay down. I get it, you guys deal with a lot of people. But you KNEW he was coming, you KNEW how bad it was, and you KNEW how it was worsening his condition. I am horrified, truly sickened by it.
