I visited Galway Hospital today and had an exceptional experience. The hospital is conveniently located in the city center, making it very easy to access whether you are walking or driving. The campus is large, very clean, and features nice green spaces as well as a restaurant inside.
The reception was excellent; a helpful Pakistani girl assisted me right at the beginning. After that, a nurse took over and she was incredibly kind and professional. We then saw the doctor. The service was top-notch and surprisingly fast—completely different from Dublin hospitals! I didn't expect to finish so quickly, especially since they efficiently managed to check my blood pressure, do a blood test, and perform an X-ray.
The doctor was wonderful and very understanding. They even provided me with free food and juice, and there was tea and coffee available as well. The hospital is spacious, well-maintained, and equipped with convenient phone charging stations. All the staff members were polite and professional. Thank you, Galway! Thank you, Ireland!
I brought my son with a finger fracture sustained whilst playing rugby, granted the wait was long and the paeds department was full to the brim with young patients and very anxious parents. The doctor handling our case Dr.May was very supportive during the wait as i had a few weeks old infant with me, she brought my son and i refreshments, food, hot water as we waited… soo kind and thoughtful and did everything in her power to make sure the xray was done as quick as possible.
As we were a referral from another hospital we waited for a while but as soon as it was our turn, the surgeons were nothing short of brilliant and explained all options available, finally the Surgeon- finger specialist Dr.Fiachra Power has been nothing but attentive, supportive and has walked the journey with my son till date. Bravo! I would recommend this brilliant surgeon any day!👏🏽👏🏽
want to preface that it’s not busy here, nor has it been all day. Had to pester the nurses and reception multiple times in 5 hours for pain medication for my partner who presented with severe back pain and spasms, a history of arthritis and a slipped disc. still waiting now. I had to ask for a wheelchair, was brought by reception into the dreaded hallway of gurneys, only to be told there weren’t any left (and no seats) I found one myself in general admissions. my partner was crying with the pain and was rolled out of the first nurses’ office and was not offered any assistance while I went to the toilet. no meds, no kindness, no questions other than what reception already asked. no clarity from reception just the good ol “ask anyone else” attitude. witnessed a tall blonde nurse, she has short hair and is very tall and loud, smack the legs of a clearly VERY unwell patient in a wheelchair. she was barely conscious and rolled by another member of staff between two toilet entrances and woke up confused that a NURSE had smacked her while she was asleep like some old school nun. unacceptable. inhumane and cruel. will update when we’re seen to see if this is really the standard of care in galway university hospital.
I visited the Acute Sergical Assessment Unit in University Hospital Galway on Friday 6th March 2026. I underwent a minor procedure during which i recieved first class care and expert attention. Thank you all so very much. Steve C.
amazing experience here with the doctors all tests run quickly only issue is a nurse reused an iv cannula on me.. which she shouldn’t have and could’ve seriously damaged my wrist
UPDATE: the lady working the emergency department desk is the rudest person i’ve ever met!! i needed the letter i handed in from the out of hours gp and she said “no” like excuse me?? this is MY LETTER MY PROPERTY??
This was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a hospital.
After a road traffic accident, I was in severe pain and unable to move my arm, yet the reception staff decided it was ‘not an emergency’ and made us wait. This kind of judgment from someone who hasn’t even examined a patient is completely unacceptable.
What made things even worse was the attitude — we were polite the entire time, but were treated with rudeness, disrespect, and a complete lack of empathy. At one point, security was even called to remove my brother, who was the only person there to support me and had done absolutely nothing wrong.
I waited over 4 hours in pain, and even after being brought in, there was no urgency whatsoever. Staff were moving slowly as if nothing serious was happening — not just in my case, but with other patients too.
I understand hospitals are busy, but this was not just about waiting times. It was the attitude, the lack of care, and the way patients are treated that is deeply concerning. No one in pain should be made to feel ignored and disrespected like this
If you really struggle with your mental health and your gp referral you to Dr O'Sullivan's Outpatient Clinics, be aware that they like to abandon their patients.. im in a bad place myself and as much i hate myself and all my life i dont want to give up as easy, so i went for help... After few visits and tons of antidepressants still no improvement, one day i came on my appointment with a bad mood but i forced myself to be there because im telling myself they will help me, another visit and another(different) doctor/specialist person.. i sat down and she start her interview so cheerful asking me how am i enjoying the weather.. i guess, being homeless let me be in touch with nature.. then she start chaotically "helping" me by ringing to some agencies without even knowing what she is saying.. i know i might have act little on emotions because i cannot control it lately, especially (!!) on their meds they give me, but i told her i dont want to talk with her anymore and i left.. after i calm down a little i realised i act too quickly so i wanted to fix things, i tried to contact social worker of theirs and another "specialist" but ive been ignored on every occasion, i dont understand how people that supposedly should be trained in those situations to deal with people and their breakdowns, professionals with phd diplomas act like a child and abandon their patients... Im not surprised that ireland have such a big percentage of suicide when your professionals drives you to that point.
Unless its only because im not native irish.
Anyway, be aware there might be trouble if you "explode" on one of your appointments!!

If I could give this place zero stars I would just a shocking hospital. Only come here if you have to. There never is any parking and will be stuck in a que for hours. The waiting times are measured in days here as well good luck to you if you’re really sick. The phone lines might as well be non existent been trying for over an hour just to confirm a maternity appointment and no answer at both the main reception and the maternity reception.
