Dear Optilase Team,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the scheduling and communication regarding my ongoing treatment following my IOL lens replacement surgery in April 2025.
While the initial surgery and consultation went well, my experience over the past year has been disappointing due to significant delays and administrative issues. After developing Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) and undergoing two YAG laser treatments, my reading vision remained poor. The subsequent process to address this has been fraught with complications:
- Trial Lens Delays: I experienced two cancelled appointments because a trial contact lens took six weeks to arrive.
- Scheduling Conflicts: After a consultation confirmed that Lasik is required to correct remaining astigmatism, I scheduled a weekend morning appointment to accommodate my 200km round-trip journey from Louth. However, four days before the procedure, I was asked to move this to a Friday afternoon during peak traffic. The alternative offered—Saturday at 11:30 AM with a projected 2-3 hour wait—is equally unsuitable given the travel distance and the impact on those accompanying me.
I feel that because this corrective procedure does not generate new revenue, my care has become a low priority. This process has taken six months longer than necessary, and as a result, I no longer feel comfortable recommending Optilase to others.
On a positive note, I want to commend the staff at the Carrickmines and South William Street clinics; they are professional and helpful. The issue lies within Optilase’s internal systems and communication.
I hope you can address these concerns and provide a more reliable and considerate approach to customers in the future.
My experience of Optilase has been incredible. Such a life changing experience. From the initial consultation through to the surgery and follow up appointments I was so impressed with the level of care and attention to detail. Every step was carefully explained, I felt at ease the whole time and so excited about the process and end result. Walking into the post op appointment the following morning and having better than 20/20 vision has only ever been a dream for me. The team in Optilase made this possible for which I am very thankful. Freedom from glasses and contact lenses has transformed my life!
Whilst this organisation has a a high standard of optometrists and surgeons, their quality of service is abysmal. I have had appointment times changes without notice, conflicting advice given, missing consent forms, and have been left ignored for the request of non-prescription eyedrops.
They have made the process of laser eye surgery so beyond stressful, I cannot recommend it to anyone I know. If you are nervous about this procedure and require attentive care, avoid this place at all costs.
Extremely Disappointed
DO NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH OPTILASE.
I paid €9,000 for lens replacement surgery in 2025, and my experience has been extremely disappointing from start to finish.
The surgery itself was problematic. While my right eye was completed without issue, the procedure on my left eye had to be stopped twice due to pain, and the result has never been satisfactory. To this day I do not have proper focus in that eye.
What has been equally frustrating is the lack of proper follow-up care and organisation. The staff member who initially assessed me went on maternity leave shortly after my surgery and was not replaced, which meant I was not seen again for a full month after the procedure. After paying €9,000, the burden seemed to fall on me to chase appointments and follow-ups.
Since then I have had to travel repeatedly for appointments that have been changed, delayed, or poorly managed. Most recently, after travelling from home for a 10am appointment, I was informed enroute that the consultant would be 20 minutes late. What made this more frustrating was that the day before I had received a call asking if I could move my appointment to later in the day, which I explained was not possible. These appointments are made many weeks in advance, and as a working professional I organise my schedule carefully around them. I cannot simply rearrange my work and clients at short notice. Having already confirmed that I could not change the appointment, being told while travelling that the consultant would now be running late showed a complete disregard for a patient’s time. As a working professional with a full schedule, this level of disregard for a patient’s time is unacceptable.
At €9,000, I expected professional care, proper follow-up, and respect for my time. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience.
I would strongly advise anyone considering treatment to think very carefully before committing to this clinic.

Pre-procedure - didn’t receive any of the paperwork due to an admin error. Had to go to the clinic the day before my procedure to get it, including the consent form.
Procedure - literally takes a few minutes for Lasik, zero pain or even discomfort during it. You can’t see what’s going on, it’s all a blur. The consultation with the surgeon (Thomas Materman) before the procedure was very thorough, he even changed the plan to better suit my lifestyle and age. Very mild stingy sensation and light sensitivity that evening after the anaesthetic wore off. By the following morning, perfect vision!
Recommendation - if you are considering it, definitely do it. As a naturally nervous person this is nothing to be worried about!
Couldn't be happier with my experience of the Lasek eye surgery. I had consultations in St William Street and surgery in Carrickmines, staff in both clinics were friendly, professional, and excellent staff their job. I would recommend Optilase to anyone considering laser eye surgery.
Wonderful professional staff from the call takers to the Consultant ophthalmic Surgeon. I had such a great experience. I now have 20/20 vision which is fantastic. Still seeing the halos from lights at night but I'm assured this will pass. Highly recommend.
Excellent service. I found optilase really great to deal with- they were so professional and well organised before and during the laser eye surgery. They were also very friendly and the aftercare was great.
