I accompanied an elderly person to the Mater's Emergency Department on 04/06/26. A referral had been made by the GP and send via email. The person was extremely and unwell with suspected pneumonia and the GP suggested Mater instead of CUH due to the person's frailty. The person was too unwell to walk from the front door to the ED department. A very nice, very professional porter helped us with a wheelchair. He was the only professional I was impressed with there. When we arrived at the admissions office, we were told there had been a mistake and there was no bed available. We were then left standing outside the admissions office, completely ignored, not assisted in any way by anyone, except for the porter. A nurse, very offhandedly informed us there were no beds. The admission clerk told us there had been a mistake. The person I was wish was obviously extremely unwell, but no medical person came near us to help. I asked the nurse to arrange for an ambulance transfer to CUH. She gave me a disparaging look and walked off, to phone for an ambulance, I assumed. I saw her attending to another patient some minutes later, she had not called for an ambulance, nor had anyone else there. I called for a friend to come and transport us to the CUH (where the person received excellent care). I realised that this ED department is not set up for any serious cases. If Aisling get a sprained ankle at pony club or if Finn gets an injury on the Rugby field, or if you think the lobster toastie you had at the golf club isn't sitting right on the tum, then this is the place for you. If you have a serious complaint, they will turn you away, do not waste your time coming here if you have a serious emergency, you will waste valuable time while they think of a reason to get rid of you. If you are very elderly, very young, very unwell or very complicated, do not attempt to seek treatment here, you will not receive appropriate care here. Go to one of the public Emergency Departments. This place is a facility for reassuring the wealthy worried well, it is not for dealing with actual, real emergencies.
My elderly Mam had an exceptional experience at Mater hospital recently. The primary care was excellent and everything explained clearly - the staff are fantastic and special mention to Elaine on the fourth floor who was such a great support to my mother through her severe anxiety pre-operation and to Charles also for his extra mile help after the operation.
Mater Private Cork Google reviews I had an irregular heart beat every now and then for many years and no consultant seemed to be able to diagnose the precise issue until I met Dr Maheshwar Pauriah, who is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Mater Private Hospital Cork. He was able to immediately spot the issue and operated on me within a few weeks to carry out a cardiac heat ablation for arrhythmias procedure which totally cured my irregular and rapid heartbeat issue. I would have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Pauriah to anyone else who is experiencing similar heart arrhythmia issues which often are highlighted these days by smartwatch alarms and notifications. It was a fast and minimally invasive operation with a short 48-hour hospital stay requirement.
The main issue with Urgent Cardiac Care at the Mater is the transparency with their charges. On arrival you are advised that the €275 charge 'may' increase to a capped fee of €800 should additional tests be required.
However, the ADDITIONAL tests occur when you leave the receptionist/check in.
Bloods and an ECG are done immediately and THEY are the ADDITIONAL tests. 4 days after this the Mater, who have kept your card details on file will take the remaining €520 from your account without invoicing you (Your receipt will arrive 10 days from your visit date). The receipt will itemise each blood test (of which there are 11) and they cost €70 (haemoglobin) and €45 each for the remaining 10, the ECG costs €60. Be aware of this lack of transparency before you attend.
The staff are fantastic and very supportive especially if you’re anxious.
💕
The hospital is spotless.
The cafe very disappointed.
Very dissatisfied as I was fasting for a long time .
I was waiting 7 hr for to see the doctor
I found the doctor are all about the money money money .
I have nothing but praise for the Mater at Cork. All of the staff were excellent. I feel there was just about the right amount of care, without being overly pampered, which I prefer.
There was a good deal of waiting involved pre surgery, but this is to be expected.
The food was simply excellent. Great choice and quality.
I stayed in the Rochestown Park Hotel the night before the operation and actually felt more relaxed, and had a better time at the Mater than the hotel!! Maybe the Mater should be renamed the Mater Hotel, not Hospital!
Thank you once again to all you brilliant people that made my stay so pleasurable.
Super experienced and friendly staff.
My procedures were conducted by the book.
I felt zero discomfort which was important to me given it was my first hospital procedure ever.
