Two of my family members beat cancer through the relentless hours, days, months with the care of The University of Chicago.
I know the er gets brought up here (in reviews) mostly — from my experience every ER is chaos and I am just grateful they exist and try their best 😂🙏🤞
If you want top of the line research, doctors with bedside manner, and understandable patient education — there’s no better experience than U of C Medicine in this state.
Forever grateful for all the hard work, communication, and true care for patient choice that we have seen at this hospital. Thank you!! 🙏
The surgeon I had, her whole operating team, and the administrative staff there were EXCELLENT. I couldn’t have asked for better care. The caveat is, the hospital, apparently, “redeems the right to charge the patient for post-op services” and doesn’t inform their administrative staff that. Was point blank told that the post-op visit is included in the surgery charge to my insurance, therefore I wouldn’t have to pay a dime, because I was losing that insurance at the end of the month and wouldn’t have been able to afford the visit otherwise. Turns out, the hospital was going to charge me $400 because I didn’t go to the doctors private office for the post op visit, which was not an option given to me.
I recently had a hospital stay at the University of Chicago Hospital, and I felt compelled to share how exceptional my experience was. From the moment I arrived to the day I was discharged, every member of the team treated me with genuine compassion, professionalism, and respect.
The nursing staff was absolutely outstanding. They were attentive, patient, and incredibly supportive during a time that could have easily been overwhelming. Every question I had was answered thoroughly, and I always felt like my comfort and well-being truly mattered. Their kindness and dedication did not go unnoticed.
The doctors and medical team were equally impressive—knowledgeable, communicative, and committed to making sure I understood my care and treatment plan. It was clear that everyone works together as a team with the patient’s best interests at the center.
Clean facilities, organized care, and a staff that goes above and beyond made this the best hospital experience I’ve ever had. I am deeply grateful to the entire team at the University of Chicago Hospital for their professionalism and compassionate care. Thank you for helping me feel safe, supported, and on the path to recovery.
This review is for Interventional
Radiology at UChicago Medicine.
I came for an Out-Patient procedure. Hope, Shirley & David were The Best! They answered all of my questions, were efficient, friendly & Caring. Procedure went well, Highly recommend them!
I would have given 5 stars if my After Visit Summary handout had included At-Home Wound Care Instructions and not just upcoming appointments.
I’m writing this as both a former employee and a patient, and unfortunately my experience on the patient side was consistently frustrating.
1) Medication / follow-up care issues:
My dermatologist prescribed a medication that my insurance (through UChicago Medicine at the time) did not cover. When I called to discuss covered alternatives, I was not connected back to my provider. Instead, I was routed to financial aid to apply for assistance to pay out of pocket.
I specifically asked to discuss insurance-approved alternatives, but was told I would need to schedule a new appointment (approximately $400) just to revisit medication options. This felt unnecessary given it was a direct continuation of the original visit.
2) Pharmacy and shipping problems:
UCM strongly encourages use of its own pharmacy, often via mail order. In my case, medication was shipped via FedEx and arrived visibly damaged and repackaged, with the contents soaked. The pharmacy declined to overnight a replacement despite the condition of the shipment, which delayed treatment.
3) Repeated prescription routing errors:
Our prescriptions were repeatedly transferred from the correct standard outpatient pharmacy to a “specialty pharmacy” that was not appropriate for the medication and did not support mail order. This caused ongoing delays. After escalating to management, I was told this should not be happening and would be corrected, but the issue continued multiple times.
4) In-person pharmacy experience:
Related to the above error I had to drive over an hour to pick up medication. Because they refuse to overnight prescriptions even when there is a treatment delay due to their error. After waiting about 30 minutes, I observed a staff member deliver my prescription to the front desk (clearly heard my name.) When I approached to retrieve it, I was still asked to wait an additional 10 minutes while staff searched for the medication that had just been handed off moments earlier. They refused to listen to me when I told them I literally just saw the person put it on the desk behind them.

UChicago Medicine may have strong care for complex or specialized medical needs, or so I hear. However, based on my experience, routine care and pharmacy operations were inefficient, difficult to navigate and needlessly delayed treatment.
Given that employees are strongly encouraged to use UCM through insurance incentives, I found this especially concerning. I experienced these issues even as an employee, which raises concerns about the experience for patients without that level of familiarity or access.
For more straightforward, day-to-day care, I would strongly recommend other health systems with more streamlined processes.
I cannot say enough good things about the treatment my dad received here. From the ER to the ICU, everyone I interacted with was so helpful and kind. He had excellent treatment from very responsive staff.
I won’t be going to this hospital anymore. I recently had an appointment at UChicago Medicine. At the start, I was asked if I was comfortable with an additional staff member aka student being present. I said no, physician says “ok no worries that’s why we ask “ a couple of minutes later she tells me she’s going to come in just to hand some tools while we look at you after I already said I don’t feel comfortable when she asked me if it was OK the student come in. This made me feel uncomfortable and disrespected as a patient. I hope the hospital improves communication and respects patient consent in the future.
I really enjoyed my stay here. They delivered on patient care quality. Nothing was ever too much to ask. My nurses Shaunn&Lidya made my stay very comfortable.
