Everyone at the primary and immediate care practices are so so competent, thoughtful, and deeply patient!! I’ve had a lot of very uncomfortable intense health issues for over a year which doctors aren’t always the most empathetic towards. Last spring when I started with these guys, they’ve always been so kind, communicative, no one ever dismisses me, and Dr. Jent really seriously went the distance for me. He got me sorted when I was going through more of a frightening mystery than a clear cut health problem, got me every test fathomable, did some seriouuss detective work and was always available to answer my questions. Real life saver during a quite crazy time. And, nurse Jackie always does my blood work and she’s incredible!! Never met a more accommodating and talented phlebotomist in my life! Butterfly needle to larger gauge, it’s always so easy, fast, painless, and I never once have had any complications with bruising or excess bleeding. She is very very adept at her craft. She sits with me until I'm ready if I’m already in a lot of pain, she brings me drinks to ensure I’m hydrated, she talks with me to keep me comfortable, brings me stickers for being brave even though I’m an adult and should just BE brave 😭 she’s the sweetest soul and such a treasure for the practice!! I never get my blood drawn anywhere else now cause simply no one can out stripe her 🔥🔥
I've been a patient of Dr. Gamez for five years. My experience with her has been very good overall. Over the years, we've sorted out a regimen of medications that work for my needs.
In between my annual preventative care visits, I have to schedule a telehealth visit with the office to refill my prescriptions. During this visit, the doctor asks whether the dosage is still working and submits refill requests for my prescriptions.
This month, I needed to schedule this appointment, and the way that my schedule worked out I wasn't able to meet with Dr. Gamez. Instead, I met with Dr. Clor. Dr. Clor was affable at the time of our meeting, but clearly hadn't looked over my records. Our telehealth went like this:
Dr. Clor : "I see you're taking medication x... medication y... and medication z. And those dosages are still working for you?"
Me: "Yes, they're fine."
Dr. Clor: "Great! I'll put in those subscriptions right away, and they should be ready within the hour."
Me: "Great, thank you!"
Despite the brevity and simplicity of this telehealth visit, Dr. Clor coded this visit like this: "Office or Other Outpt Visit Est PT 30 Mins or More Mod Mdm Lvl 4 - 99214".
This was a telehealth visit that lasted no more than 3 minutes.
Because of this coding, when my claim was submitted, Blue Cross Blue Shield refused to honor my copay and instead applied this visit to my deductible. So, a routine visit that should have cost $45 (already outrageous, given the service) is now going to cost $167!
I called the office to appeal the code, but Dr. Clor won't budge. I submitted an appeal to Blue Cross Blue Shield, and with the information I provided about the service and my prescriptions, the "customer advocate" confirmed that this should have been coded as a regular office visit. But, of course, they tell me that their hands are tied unless the code is changed. I only pay BCBS $690 a month, why should I expect anything from them?
I've suspected trouble with upcoding with Michigan Avenue Primary Care in the past, but I've never really looked into it until now. I'm especially frustrated because I wanted to maintain my relationship with Dr. Gamez, so I signed up for this shitty, expensive Bronze-level PPO because they told me those are the only plans in their network. (And, just for clarity, this practice is in network.)
This is a horrible way to treat your patients, especially given skyrocketing healthcare costs. I have my scripts and a few months to think about what to do, but ultimately, I don't think I'll be returning to this practice.
They have great doctors and physician assistants at this practice. Dr. Kim caught my husband's cancer early enough for it to be treated. She also caught my liver disease early. She and her team are great.
I've seen Jocelin Gamez for the past five years as my primary care physician and she has been fantastic. She listens to your concerns and works with you to find solutions that fit your needs. She's very knowledgable, but also aware and open of any gaps, and will refer you to the right specialists as needed. I cannot recommend her enough!
I’m very disappointed with this office’s handling of my allergy prescription. I have a well-documented shellfish allergy and had an annual visit three months ago, during which my allergy was confirmed by multiple staff members. Despite this, my request for a new EpiPen (an urgent, life-saving medication) was denied because they claimed my prescription records were lost and insisted I schedule a new appointment.
It feels unprofessional and unnecessary to require another in-person visit for a prescription that is routine for adults and already clearly documented. Situations like this are stressful and potentially dangerous, especially when traveling.
Because the office is prioritizing their internal policies over patient needs, the mismanagement of records puts patients at serious risk, which is unacceptable for anyone relying on timely, critical care.
Thanks guys for the experience. I enjoy coming here since it's close to my job and I have been coming here for at least 3 years. The team has great customer service and ensures you are taken care of.
My visit was smooth! It was my first time here - took just 5 mins to check-in and I was immediately assisted by a medical assistant for vitals. Then, I met with the doctor - got my diagnosis and questions answered. Overall it was a good experience.
I’ve been coming here for ten years and always had great experiences—until Advocate bought the practice. Since then, all the doctors I knew and trusted have left, and the wait times have become extremely long, even when I have an appointment. It’s hard to understand how such a well-run practice became so disorganized after the Advocate took over.
