If I could give 0 stars, I absolutely would.
I was referred by an eye specialist to urgent care, but when I arrived at the hospital, I was told there were no walk-ins—even with a referral. The receptionist refused to accept it and said I had to call instead. I then spent 50 minutes on the phone waiting to get through, all while standing outside in the cold because the waiting area isn’t even indoors.
When I finally got through, I was told to hand the same referral letter to the receptionist—the same one who had just refused it. Then I was instructed to wait another 90 minutes outside in the cold. It’s not just frustrating, it’s completely unacceptable.
To make things worse, I then received a message asking me to take a photo of my eye and upload it online. My eye was so swollen I could barely open it, I was in pain, and yet somehow I’m expected to take a clear photo and submit it? How exactly is someone supposed to do that in this condition? What’s the point of a specialist’s referral if it’s ignored?
This doesn’t feel like a hospital—it feels like a system that makes things harder for people who are already suffering. If a patient is in pain, can’t see properly, or can barely function, how are they realistically expected to jump through all these hoops just to be admitted?
An incredibly stressful, exhausting, and disappointing experience.
On the photo its waiting area...
I had really great experience today. I had eye problem over a month. My local GP referred me to the Eye Hospital to get it checked. From the time I entered the Emergency department. All the staffs are really friendly. I first checked in at the desk, then about 40 mins nurse checked me. After waiting for another 15 mins I got to see the doctor Barbara. She is super friendly and helpful. She gave me a lot of advice on how to look after my eyes. I'm really happy for today's appointment. Thanks so much!
Went to the Eye & Ear Hospital Dublin this morning, referral letter sent by my GP to Emergency Department yesterday at noon, received Tel call yesterday at 4pm asking me to attend emergency department at 9.40am today, I arrived at 9.10 (left home early due to the traffic issues). Was seen by nurse soon after and then the doctor at about an hour and a half after that, all in all was there for approximately 2 hours. To be honest I expected to be there most of the day so was delighted to leave at 11am all done and given the all clear. All staff were very pleasant and helpful and the lady selling the tea/coffee and snacks was lovely. Very impressed with the efficiency well done.
The doctor we saw is the only reason I'm not giving one star. He was very knowledgeable, understanding and patient. There is so little parking it essentially zero especially for disabled people. On street parking is insanely expensive and scarce. The hospital is incredibly inaccessible, the ramps are so steep I though my rollator was going to drag me down the ramps.
IT IS NOT AN EMERGENCYCY ROOM.
when there's a sign saying that the ER is appointment only that's a clinic. Your “appointment” is merely a suggested arrival time.
Hygiene. Non existent until you actually see a doctor. We were seen in about 2 hours but there were people there who had there 4 hours plus. The place is filthy the seating is unsafe, if you have mobility issues I do not recommend attending alone. Until get get called in everything is disgusting and not the greatest smell.
The reception staff seemed to be doing there best. But not a single hint of anyone even trying to to clean the place.
Upon follow-up visit on: 23/3/26
Amended to 1 star, staff tried to separate an autistic adult from next of kin because the over-scheduled or fell behind. Unacceptable
Never seen such situation in Developed Country/1st world country🤣

If there was an option for 0 stars I would use that. I have emergency issue that could not be sorted in my local general hospital due to not having to right equipment. I was told by the local hospital to quickly make my way to this absolute joke of a hospital. My own error was that I never knew I had to call to get a time as I was given a referral letter for the ED.
I get there to be refused when I’m actively bleeding from the auditory ear canal and have a blood clot in my auditory canal. They said they were finished for Easter and to come in Tuesday? Firstly in an active bleeding situation I would’ve thought that to be emergent. When I said I was afraid of getting an infection, I was downplayed like it was not a big deal and to go home. Then tried to keep my referral letter and the clinical notes from referring general hospital and made me wait 20 mins to get it back. This happened yesterday.
This morning, my neck is stiff and swollen and I have fluid and blood still dripping out of my ear and is probably infected and now need to go to a general hospital again. I can’t believe with all the resources my country has, they could’ve sorted the problem in all of 5 mins with their correct equipment. I’m extremely sick today and in excruciating pain in my neck ear and jaw.
I understand policies are in place and I understand my error was not calling but the bigger picture is, they could’ve made me worse if I held out for an appointment until Tuesday if I’m like this 12 hours later and this is medically negligent. I have all proof of everything and am losing my hearing and now waiting in a different general hospital.
Something is seriously wrong here. Why can’t they maintain realistic appointment system. Waiting for hours is not an easy task. World is going forward and technology is at its peak. Agree the staff and facilities are good. But the system could have been sorted out best possible way to minimise waiting period.
Absolutely horrible service I received this morning, March 22.
I called to make an emergency appointment as I have severe inflammation in my eye, which appears to have spread to my face (I am concerned it could be something serious, possibly even an infection).
A nurse called me back at 9:55am, but instead of helping, she was shouting at me on the phone, telling me to go to a GP. When I tried to explain that this is an emergency and that I feel very unwell and that there are no GPs available on a Sunday she repeatedly interrupted me, was extremely rude and did not listen.
When I asked for her name, she refused to provide it saying, “You don’t need to know my name,” and then hung up the phone!!!!!
What kind of service is this? An emergency department in one of the biggest eye clinics in Dublin hanging up on a patient in need???
I am in shock and would like a response from management regarding this incident.
If my condition worsens or leads to a serious diagnosis due to the lack of proper care and assistance, I will have no choice but to take this matter further.
This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. People with this attitude should not be working in public-facing roles, especially in emergency departments where patients require care, support and professionalism.
Absolutely disgusting service!!!!!
