I am from South Africa. I came to CUH for an emergency while I was visiting Cork as a tourist. My Irish contacts warned me that the waiting hours can be very long, but I opted for CUH from a financial perspective.
I did go in quite early in the morning. My friends who are doctors have told me between 5 and 7am is normally the quieter time in an ER.
I arrived at 06h30. I was with a nurse by 06:45, a doctor by 09:00, and in a bed admitted by 12:30.
I was blown away by the helpfulness and competence of the staff. The hospital is very clean. Compared to government hospitals I had seen in my life, this was completely different.
I did get a little challenged by the lack of communication from the medical staff. Nobody informed me that I was admitted. I thought I just needed one round of IVs. I eventually walked to the nurses station to ask. Only saw a doctor the following afternoon.
My experience was really mostly good. Despite having very little support being so far away from home.
It is evident that the hospital and its staff are under extreme pressure. The halls are full of people waiting to be attended to, or waiting for beds.
But Despite that, they are friendly and extremely professional in their approach. I am very aware that I was very lucky with how well this experience went for me, that I got a bed right away, and that my condition was treatable over 3 days.
I commend all the staff here. I really do. Its not an easy working environment.
As an Irish citizen, it's known that our health system is a disgrace across the board and multi-hour visits to A&E are nothing out of the ordinary. However, I recently visited A&E with my partner (referred by a Laya Clinic) and had the worst experience in a hospital in my life that really opened my eyes to just how bad things are.
Firstly, let me say the following; All staff were absolutely brilliant. They were empathetic, helpful, polite etc; which is a testament to them, given they work in such a broken system. I couldn't be more complimentary of them; working such a hard job.
Long story short; we arrived at 4pm, got bloods/blood pressure within the first hour (all looking good) but then sat for the next 6 hours with no contact from anyone or indication what was next. With us both having jobs, we were starting to wonder if getting up and leaving was becoming a possibility.
My partner was then moved into the 'pod' room which is just another waiting room with fancier chairs and seemingly, the illusion of being seen soon.
My partner wasn't seen by a doctor until 5:20am in the morning, 13 hours after we arrived; both with work the next morning and her symptoms were neurological in nature and quite scary.
I've done 6-8 hour waits in CUH, A&E in years gone by but to see how poorly it is run, how understaffed it is and how fragmented and completely not fit for purpose it is, is really shocking.
If either of us have any strange symptoms from a health perspective, we'll just take our chances next time because never again are we going here.
I attended the ED in CUH on Sunday evening. From the moment I entered the hospital, all staff were so helpful, kind and professional. I was in the ED for almost 24 hours, and observed the wonderful care for patients from doctors and nurses, catering staff and attendants and the extensive cleaning regime which was implemented relentlessly even throughout the night. While the waiting was long, I was kept updated on my situation and was very pleased with the clinical thoroughness in exploring and eliminating potential causes of my symptoms to establish diagnosis and treatment. I cannot praise the staff highly enough- they are working in a busy and crowded environment, and have to prioritise emergencies, but this did not diminish the care and professionalism.
Got seen and an X-Ray and discharged for a fall within 3 hours! Was so pleasantly surprised and all the staff were extremely kind polite and respectful. A meal was also provided which was an amazing plus.
I recently attended the Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital and was examined by Irish doctors whose names I unfortunately do not recall. I had a very positive experience throughout.
The doctors were kind, calm, and professional, and I felt listened to and taken seriously. Everything was explained clearly, and further tests were arranged promptly, which I greatly appreciated and found reassuring.
Based on my experiences over time, I have consistently found the Irish doctors I have encountered to be kind, empathetic, thorough, and reassuring, and this visit reflected that same high standard of care.
I would also like to mention a lovely member of the cleaning staff who was working the night shift in the Emergency Department. She was extremely kind and helped me organise a taxi before I left.
I am very grateful for the care and support I received.
After my accident, which resulted in a severe cut of almost 8cm on my head, I was brought in from the West Coast to the ER in Cork with the ambulance emergency lights on. Despite the ER looking full, a doctor came to see me after just two hours of waiting.
Shortly after, I received stitches, and we waited through the night for some lab results. Throughout the entire experience, everyone was extremely friendly and attentive, bringing food and drinks multiple times.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the whole crew for treating my wife and me so well. Their professionalism and kindness made a difficult situation much more manageable.
The worse hospital I ever been
I have been waiting for more than 10 hours to have my leg put in a cast. This has never happened to me in any hospital I have ever been to. I find it deeply discouraging that this is possible in a healthcare system, especially when you are paying for it.
26/03/26 during my shift I developed numbness and pain on my left side. I went to the EDat 8 p.m. and waited until 9a.m. to see a doctor.its a short time.🙃iam very proud as a staff
