I would like to give a big thank you to all the nurses and staff in the Paediatric Ward at University Hospital Waterford. They were absolutely amazing — kind, caring, and professional from start to finish. The nurses showed such patience and compassion, making sure every child felt safe and comfortable. The doctors and staff were always friendly and helpful, explaining everything clearly and treating us with great respect.
We’re so grateful for their hard work and dedication. Truly a wonderful team who make a big difference every day!
One of the worst experiences of my life.
My wife and newborn baby had to endure both physical and emotional distress following delivery.
The level of incompetence and irresponsibility from some staff members was shocking. Arrogance and a lack of compassion made a very sensitive time far more difficult than it should have been.
Moreover, the Dermatology Department at UHW has been extremely unresponsive. Despite repeated attempts to contact them and waiting for over 12 weeks, there has been no update, which is both shocking and reflects a lack of responsibility. In addition, after numerous requests from my wife’s consultant for the Breast Care Team to visit, only one member eventually attended — and unfortunately, he appeared unprepared and provided little to no assistance.
The overall environment in the postnatal ward was also far from suitable. The rooms are cramped, leaving very little space for comfort or recovery. The chairs provided for partners are uncomfortable and cannot recline, offering no rest during long hours of support. Even private rooms lack basic facilities such as a fridge or adequate amenities. On top of this, the parking fees are unreasonably high for patients and families already coping with physical pain, exhaustion, and emotional distress.
The only star is for the kindness shown by a very few professionals, who at least demonstrated care and understanding.
Very positive experience in the early pregnancy unit/obs and gynae ward. I was treated with such care, compassion and professionalism. I am so impressed with the entire healthcare team here.
I had a very positive visit to Waterford hospital yesterday I had an ecg a chest xray and bloods done in 3 hours and I could go home happy it was incredibly busy there but the queue moved along nicely
Depending on the person you speak to, you can have either a pleasant or terrible experience. Porters, security and cleaners are usually nice, though. Speak to them if you can.
Be especially careful with the non-EU nurses in med 3. Except a few, they don't treat people well. There are others like that across other services, you will know them.
The paramedics are truly a credit to this hospital; and that’s about it. The rest of the doctors and nurses are dismissive and short fused. Unfortunately a lot of us don’t have the choice to choose what hospital we go to, especially outside of Dublin. It’s a shame this is the standard of treatment.
On Thursday, 5th February 2026, I attended Waterford University Hospital for my routine vascular scan to monitor an aneurysm. During the scan, the radiographer, Cathy, noticed something wasn’t quite right and immediately called a doctor for a second opinion. After reviewing the scan, he informed me that I needed to be admitted straight away.
I was admitted to Ardkeen Ward, and from that moment on it felt like a well-oiled machine in action. Over the following five days, everything ran like clockwork — from the doctors and nurses to the catering, hygiene, and administrative staff.
The care and overall experience were excellent and faultless. The calm, professional environment put me completely at ease, which made all tests and examinations far less stressful. Thankfully, no major surgery was required in the end.
My sincere thanks to all the staff for providing such a professional and stress-free experience at Waterford University Hospital.
Only one word to describe this hospital (Useless) I just got surgery and it was handled very wrong not the procedure itself but after trying to get results and sitting in a&e for over 11 hours and they did nothing for me waited till 5 o clock in the morning and said they would have to do bloods which they did the night before while I waited for another 6 hours they did a swab on my wound which I can clearly see is infected was told i would hear back in three days still nothing I tried to call back and got transfered to two different departments and they just hung up if your thinking about going to a hospital highly recommended a different one
