I am writing this out of sheer desperation and frustration, hoping it might actually make a difference for the next family. My daughter was referred here by our GP with severe abdominal pain, yet what we encountered was a facility that is "Emergency" in name only.
It is, in reality, a glorified waiting room.
We have had to visit this facility twice now, and both times were a nightmare of exhaustion and neglect.
• The first visit: We sat for 4 hours with no progress.
• The second visit: We arrived at 4:00 AM, thinking the early hour might help. We waited another 3 hours only to discover there were still 7 patients ahead of us.
After speaking with other exhausted parents in the ward, I learned the horrifying reality: some have been waiting 11 hours just to see a single doctor.
It is not just "horrible"—it is pathetic and dangerous. While the reception counter advertises a wait time of 4 to 6 hours, that is a complete fantasy. The wait is endless.
The most heartbreaking part is that the hospital staff who are actually there are excellent; they are just being set up to fail.
Currently, there are only two doctors attempting to handle the entire emergency load. With 8 more patients waiting and the existing ones to care for, the math simply doesn't work.
This system is fundamentally broken. When a child is in severe pain, every hour feels like an eternity—to be forced to wait 11 hours is a failure of care.
Please be warned: if you come here, prepare for a wait that goes way beyond what is posted on the wall.
This is the review for this hospital management. The staff and the doctors are really nice and efficient however what I feel is that at least for the emergency ward, the number of doctors and staff are really less, because of this they are unable to provide urgent care to sick children. The hospital does has enough place to sit and it is maintained really well, I hope it stays the same.
My baby was triaged due to high fever, at some point it was even 39.4 C, and we had to wait around 10 hours to see a doctor here. If you ask patients to wait 10 hours then it is no longer providing any emergency treatments here.
Arrived at the outpatient department to see the children urologist for an annual check-up. We were called to see a doctor. After check up we told that our little was peeing very frequently and if they could do a urine test here as we are in a hospital. The first person had to leave and returned with the actual doctor (he was probably from east, like Indian). That was a little surprise. They agreed to test the urine, the nurse asked doctor to see our little boy’s testicles. But when we went to the toilet all of them just disappeared. No, they weren’t busy, no patients were around.
Nurse didn’t send urine to lab, tested something and came back to say N/A loudly and that our boy is fine.
My 4 year old now is registered with a GP as symptoms are getting worse. Sad that they just don’t care, little ones need more attention here in Ireland and people especially doctors should see every child as their own as you should be an example for future generations
On 5 December, after one and a half years of waiting, our child finally had a paediatric appointment at CHI at Tallaght Children’s Outpatient and Emergency Care Unit.
During the appointment, the paediatrician took a blood sample on site. We personally witnessed our 4.5-year-old child having this blood test done.
After the appointment, we waited over a month and did not receive any blood test results. We then asked our GP to request the results on our behalf.
The GP contacted the clinic to obtain the blood test results. A couple of weeks later, when we followed up with our GP, we were told that no results had been received, and that the clinic stated no blood test had been performed on our child.
This was extremely concerning, as we clearly saw the blood test being carried out during the appointment.
We contacted the clinic directly, but were told that no information could be shared with us, and that only the GP could request it. We contacted our GP again, who confirmed that this was the response received — a complete denial that any blood test had taken place.
As a result, our child is now expected to undergo another blood test, purely due to administrative failure and lack of proper record-keeping.
We find it unacceptable that a young child must go through a repeated invasive procedure because a healthcare provider denies an event that clearly occurred. This reflects a serious breakdown in communication, accountability, and basic patient care.
Please provide us with our son’s blood yesterday result after almost 7th weeks!!!!!
The staff T this hospital were incredible they took such good care of my daughter age 6 when she was admitted recently. A special mention to Dr Maya Paediatrician who was so reassuring at a very stressful time
Fantastic service every time for our family despite being extremely under resourced:
We have been patients of TUH for years and have had good experiences.
More recently my 6 week old son contracted Covid. The care he received in ED & in the Maple Ward was fantastic.
Fast forward to March we all had the displeasure of contracting Flu B. Again ED were fantastic and this time we stayed on the Oak Ward who were also amazing. They did everything they could to keep a smile on his face and to help us feel cared for.
The bad reviews for poor service are unfair. These people work long hours often covering 2/3 jobs at a time because they are under resourced. A lot of them are abused every day because of this despite them trying their best. I can honestly say I was so impressed with how well they coped under pressure, how professional, kind and compassionate they were despite what they were up against. Will always be extremely grateful to them and appreciate all they do day to day.
The doctors, nurses, and facilities are excellent, and I was in and out within two hours. However, it did seem that the hospital is understaffed, and trying to accommodate everyone at once makes it difficult, which I believe contributes to the lengthy delays. That said, I appreciate that they take the necessary time with patients, as rushing is not appropriate in a hospital setting
We are from abroad and my daughter had an accident. The receptionists, nurses and doctors were very kind and empathetic. Thank you very much for making us feel comfortable and safe.
